Everyone was famished. An assortment of savory dishes had been placed before us. We ate to our hearts content but were alarmed to discover that this was just the antipasti portion of the dinner! We would also be given primo, secondo and dolce courses. Everything (and the portions were unending) was homemade including the wine, the tiramisu and the limoncello.

And from the small world category

Our host had worked as a pilot on cargo ships. In 1969, he skippered a vessel carrying wheat all the way to Duluth, Minnesota, our home state. He stated that it was too cold and he never wanted to return!

Before leaving Sorrento, we took two day trips to Pompeii and to Capri.

Sorrento

From Positano we hopped in vans for transport back to the bus and rode to Sorrento. Lovely neighborhoods, plazas and a great gelateria were an easy walk from the hotel.

The tour included a unique and wonderful opportunity to have dinner at the home of a local family. The food was cooked using their wood burning stove. The meal was presented in a reconverted stable or garage which accommodated all 29 of us comfortably.

Pompeii

Mary got separated from the group on our way to take the train to Pompeii. Thankfully, our cell phones quickly reconnected us. On the train, we were serenaded by a young accordion player who was very engaging.

The ruins were awesome. It was a warm, lovely day. Our guide was delightful and took us to key points so that we were not overwhelmed by taking in too much. The bath houses were wonderfully preserved and transported us back across time to 78 A.D.  We felt as if time had been suspended but arrived back in Sorrento with plenty of it available before dinner. Just marvelous!

Capri

We easily purchased ferry tickets a short walk from our hotel. The ticket agent informed us that a ticket was necessary for the return trip.

As we disembarked on Capri, we panicked! We had misplaced our return tickets. We ran back to the ferry to notify the crew who were preparing to cast off. They told us not to worry and to simply remind them when we came aboard again. Kudos to the crew for easing our minds which helped us enjoy Capri!

The island was lovely. We rented a public boat, shared with just a few other folks, to tour the island by water. Unfortunately, the waves were too strong that day and we were unable to circumnavigate the entire  island. We had our own Blue Lagoon experience in a smaller cave but at no additional charge. The iridescent aquamarine color of the water was hypnotizing. Our captain spotted a smack of small  jellyfish. He plucked one from the water for our viewing before gently returning it. Mary & I enjoyed a light lunch by the shore before returning to Sorrento.
